What is the 'best' tactical scope for my FAL ?

Ok, first off - I'm not looking for a *sniper* scope or anything that cost $-hundreds-$ of dollars..........

I'm looking for something economical but not 'cheap' like some of those $20-$30 scopes.........though I'm sure they have a place (like on an SKS).

A buddy of mine recommended a laser scope or 'red dot' scope for finding a target 'quickly'.

What are you tactical rifle guys using or recommend ??? Specifications ? Also, post pics if you got 'em !

Thanks 4 your input !

Re: What is the 'best' tactical scope for my FAL ?

I have a thing against any scope that requires a battery.

The Trijicon ACOG is universally accepted as being the best ambient illumination magnified tactical scope, but it will run you $850 - http://www.swfa.com/pc-9700-225-trij...fle-scope.aspx.

Also the Trijicon unmagnified Reflex uses ambient illumination and will run you about $320: http://www.swfa.com/pc-4223-229-trij...ted-sight.aspx.

I'd lean toward that ACOG on a FAL. It really isn't that pricey compared to the $1,500 spent on the rifle.

However, if you want something cheaper in a traditional reticle, then consider the Nikon ProStaff. Nikon makes great optics, and you can get one from www.elkhuntersports.com for only $139 (3-9x40). However, you might be more inclined to use a fixed 4x on a FAL. You might look at the Leupold 4x33 fixed (but it is $270): http://www.swfa.com/pc-3614-94-leupo...iflescope.aspx.

Spend the money on ammo and learn how to shoot off the irons.

Uber tacticool toys that sit unused are as worthless as the mall ninjas who own them.

For some reason, anything other than an ACOG on a FAL just wouldn't look right. Besides, it is what it is -- a battle rifle not a sniper gun. I agree that the iron sights are the best.

BTW... read the saga of the original "mall ninja" here: http://lonelymachines.org/mall-ninjas/. It is HILARIOUS!!!

I somewhat agree.
It is important to be able to wield the firearm with or without scope. Depending on the weapon it may be possible to use both without removing the scope. At the range I like to use irons on one rifle and then switch to a scoped rifle for distances I wouldn't be able to track unassisted. The next time the guns go out they will have switched roles.

Read that one a while back, IT IS HILARIOUS!!

Mounting a scope on a FAL is a little tricky, and an FAL isn't really known as a tack driver anyway. Bottom line is that I know guys who can use irons to outshoot the average Joe who is using his Super Sniper 24x scope. It's all about the nut behind the stock.

DSArms sells a lot of FAL accessories including flat-tops.

Some models of the Aimpoint Red Dots used by U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan utilize batteries that last 2-3 years or more CONTINUOUSLY in the ON position. In fact they are told never to turn them off...but you will pay $$$.

For play, any Walmart variety BSA scope or red dot will do. Check their website for the model of your choice...

For combat quality optics (which none of us can afford) try U.S. Optics, Inc.

This might be their cheapest one @$945

Re: What is the 'best' tactical scope for my FAL ?

It all depends. Here a 500 yard shot to take a pronghorn would be fairly normal. A sighted in scope comes in handy for these skittish animals. Once they run the meat is no good. (adrenaline)

I might add, pronghorn antelope (actually it's a member of the goat family) require some special handling after the kill to retain their best table quality. Their hollow hair is an excellent insulator. Combined with the often warm temperatures that accompany the antelope season, spoilage can be a problem unless the animal is field dressed and skinned quickly and allowed to cool. It is also important to avoid as much as possible touching the hair before touching the meat. Antelope have musk glands that secrete a waxy and pungent musk. Contact between the flesh and this musky secretion can impart both a strong odor and a strong taste to the flesh. Properly handled, pronghorn meat is excellent.

I'm well aware, in fact I've owned both DSA and Tapco mounts. That doesn't mean that they aren't problematic.

Black Blade,

No doubt a 500 yard shot on a pronghorn would be well served by quality optics. It would also be well served by another platform, operated by a man who can shoot.

You shouldn't be shooting 500 yards with any semi-automatic gun. Get a bolt gun for those applications. 300 yards should be the maximum for a FAL, but it really is a perimeter gun and should be tuned to defend a perimeter at about 200 yards.

Better be sure that first shot counts, otherwise just let the critter stroll off to die and rot in the field.

Here's one I'm looking at by Osprey >> It's a 3-12x56mm (yeah, I know it's big and 13" long).........it seems like a lot of scope for the money.

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=440594

Another thing is that I can shoot with iron sights just fine but I'm limited due to my handicap being heavily nearsighted (w/contacts). Big field of vision is always a +plus for me.

Any optic can get damaged or go bad...even expensive ones. You may need to get it off in a hurry. My go-to FAL wears a DSA mount with a 1-4x Leupold and quick-release rings. Even if the mount goes bad (loosens) I can ditch the scope and still use the irons just fine.

To be honest = ZERO......but I've shot iron sights on my AK, Tommy gun, and various other rifles.

I really don't like the loophole which is a tad too close to my eye without getting fuzzy (maybe it's too small ?) and altering my viewpoint of the sight bar on the barrel.

I do however, plan on mounting the scope high enough to use the irons regarless...........this is just pre-planning.

Re: What is the 'best' tactical scope for my FAL ?

It's supposed to be fuzzy. You ignore the rear aperture, and your eye automatically centers itself. You focus on the front sight, letting the target go fuzzy.

My whole point is that you need to be SHOOTING the gun, not thinking/tinkering/accessorizing. You'll never know what YOU need (regardless of what works for any of the rest of us), until YOU put in LOTS of range time.

A good friend of mine dropped over 3 grand on a custom 1911 with real ivory grips recently. He couldn't afford to go in with some of us on an ammo buy, nor can he afford to take a class. Guess who outshoots whom, him with his Ed Brown, or me with my 500frn Springer.

That 'conventional wisdom' has pretty well been thrown out the window. An SEI built LRB M14 recently put in an under 10" group at 1000 yards in a .gov trial at Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

Of course a bone stock FAL is a horse of a different color.

Here is a picture of one of my set-ups. Eye relief is perfect. Leupold is 1-4x with a nice, wide field of view. It has worked out very well for me...While not really a 1000 yard match piece, it will certainly throw 'em that far. Accuracy is about 1 MOA with quality military ball ammo.

Hensoldt Fero Z24, 4x power illuminated, $375

You would have to spend $30 extra for the adapter to attach the Hensoldt's stanag to your top cover's rail.
